Home Home insurance for your house under construction or conversion
October 18, 2023
A renovation or conversion project can bring surprises. It is essential to protect your property during construction or renovation! How can you ensure peace of mind during the works? What is it essential to cover during this period?
Insuring renovation or construction work: three key stages

When you decide to embark on building or renovation works, it is crucial to take certain measures  beforehand. As your insurer, we have put in place a specific home insurance policy for homes undergoing conversion that adapts to the different stages of your project and covers you in the event of a claim. Here is how it works, in three main stages:

 1. When work starts

Right from the start of construction or renovation, we cover your future home against the following events: storm, fire, explosion, lightning strike, vandalism, damage to property, attacks, acts of terrorism and industrial disputes.
We understand that construction or renovation work can sometimes result in damage to neighbouring properties. That is why our construction insurance also covers building owners' civil liability, recourse of neighbours and third parties, and recourse defence cover.

2. When the building is closed and completely covered

When the building is fully enclosed and covered (walls, roof and windows installed), cover is extended to include events such as hail, heavy snow, flooding, water damage and glass breakage. In this phase of the project, we add theft of contents cover, up to the ceiling specified in the special conditions, as soon as the property is fully enclosed, covered and equipped with the protection and locking devices required under the theft/vandalism cover. This guarantees maximum protection for your property during the construction or renovation phase.

3. When you receive the keys

Once you have definitively moved into your home, all the other covers provided by your insurance policy will apply under the conditions set out in your special terms and conditions. You no longer need to worry about the transition, as you are already covered for unforeseen events.
What's more, personal liability cover comes into play when you move in, giving you comprehensive protection.

Support during the move

Moving home is a crucial step, and we will make sure you are protected even during this transition. Here is how we support you during the move:

  • Former dwelling covered for 3 months: your former dwelling remains covered for three months from the moment you move out.
  • Transported furniture insurance: if you deal with your removal yourself and do not hire a professional, we will cover your furniture while it is being transported in the vehicle, up to a limit of €5 000.

Our aim is to offer you comprehensive protection at every stage in your project, from construction through to the finishing touches. With our during-construction insurance, you can concentrate on transforming your home with complete peace of mind.

Advantages of home insurance during construction or conversion

There are many advantages to taking out our home insurance for conversion from the very start of your project:

  • 1st year free and 2nd year at half price.
  • Simplicity and convenience: you do not have to worry about your insurance policy every step of the way. Cover is updated automatically as your work progresses. The transition is seamless, so you can concentrate on your project with complete peace of mind.
What is the difference between home conversion insurance and all-risks building site or structural damage insurance?

All-risks construction insurance will be broader than home conversion insurance.

All-risks construction insurance can be taken out by the client, owner, person for whom the house etc. is being built (“maître d’ouvrage”) or architect, building contractor (“maître d’oeuvre) . This insurance covers damage resulting from construction-related hazards. It can protect equipment, materials, workers and anything else temporarily linked to the site.

Ten-year insurance starts when the finished home is delivered, and includes a ten-year guarantee against defects.

Home conversion or construction insurance is complementary to all-risks site or ten-year insurance, as it does not cover the same losses.

In short, protecting your home while it is being converted is essential for your peace of mind. Our home insurance for conversion or construction is designed to give you comprehensive cover every step of the way, from the moment the first stone is laid to the moment you move in. This allows you to concentrate on transforming your home with complete peace of mind.
