"In 2021, 2295 fires of all sizes were fought by the fire brigade."
Apart from the obligation to install a smoke detector in your home in Luxembourg since 1rst January 2023, the most important point is that without a smoke detector it will take you longer to realise that there is a fire in your home, with all the risks that this entails. Your reaction time to the fire will be longer and so will the intervention of the fire brigade.
The smoke detector will emit a strident sound signal that will wake you up and allow you to evacuate the premises as quickly as possible, but also to warn the fire brigade.
The smoke detectors installed must be CE marked, which means that they comply with European standards and requirements.
The owner of the property is responsible for installing the smoke detectors. If the property is rented out, the tenant must ensure that the smoke detectors work properly by testing them once a year.
For good detection, the detectors should be placed in the following places
- exit routes
- bedrooms
It is also advised to place them in rooms such as living rooms, laundry rooms and boiler rooms. However, rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms should be avoided as cooking fumes or water vapours may cause the alarm to be triggered.
There is no set number of detectors that must be installed depending on the size of your home, it all depends on the design and the number of rooms.

The new law does not affect the home insurance contract. Indeed, at Baloise, a fire claim will be covered in the same way, whether a property is equipped with a smoke detector or not. The main purpose of smoke detectors is to save lives in the event of a fire. If the fire is detected early, the impact on property can also be more limited. The smoke detector is a preventive and protective device that helps to make the lives and property of our customers safer.
