Mobility Have you decided to change your car? Which model should you choose?
January 8, 2024
You want to change car but don’t know which vehicle to choose: small or large? a petrol, diesel or electric model? The choice of your new vehicle will depend on a number of criteria specific to you.

What is the best make and model of car to choose?

Here are some questions to ask yourself in order to determine your requirements:

  • What is my current situation?
  • Do I use my vehicle every day, for example to get to work?
  • Do I mainly drive in town, for short trips, or do I go on longer trips?
  • In terms of my family, is this the main vehicle we use (for example, to go on vacation) or rather a second vehicle which is used to take the children to their extra-curricular activities?
  • Approximately how many kilometres do I drive per year?
  • Do I want to switch to a more ecologically friendly solution?
  • Which equipment do I need?
  • Should the car be functional or for pleasure?
  • Do I prefer a particular brand, or is there a brand which I absolutely want to avoid?
  • What is my budget?

All these questions will help you decide on the type of vehicle which is best for you (city car, saloon car, MPV, etc.) as well as the type of engine (petrol, diesel or electric, etc.) depending on your requirements and your budget.

Should you buy a new or a used car?
Where can I find a used car?

The first consideration is often the price: for the same model, a second-hand vehicle will cost less. Some used cars on the market are still very new and have only a few kilometres on the clock. You could also consider used vehicles sold by car dealers.

Luxembourg even has a car festival dedicated to second-hand vehicles, the AutoOccasiounsFestival, which generally takes place around May-June.

Buy a new car

A new car will cost more, but will have a manufacturer's warranty which you won't necessarily have on a used car; and this should protect you against any unpleasant surprises. Maintenance costs in the first few years should also be lower.
You could take advantage of the "Autofestival" which takes place every year at the end of January and beginning of February, when the manufacturers make particularly attractive offers.

Choosing between a new or used car will therefore depend mainly on your personal preferences and your budget.

What different types of car should I choose: electric, petrol or hybrid?

Choosing between an electric, petrol or hybrid car depends on many factors: budget, daily use, distances travelled, environmental concerns, etc.

  • Electric cars are silent, emit zero emissions when driving and are generally cheaper to maintain. However, their range may be limited and the recharging network is still being developed.
  • Petrol cars are generally cheaper to buy than electric or hybrid models. They are also multipurpose and well suited to long journeys.
  • Hybrid cars combine a petrol engine with an electric motor, which can help to save fuel and reduce emissions in town.

The choice will depend above all on how you use it. Is it your main car or your second car? Do you plan to make long journeys?

It's worth noting that financial assistance for the purchase of electric vehicles, known as "clever fueren" bonuses, has been extended until 31 March 2024.
