Welcome to Luxembourg! As a newcomer, here is some essential information to make sure you are properly insured.
Welcome to Luxembourg, in the heart of Europe, where the mix of culture, history and modernity welcomes you at every corner. Luxembourg is a relatively small but very diverse country. Today almost 47% of the country's residents are foreigners, representing 170 different nationalities.
If you've just arrived, you may be wondering where to start. Whether you're here for a long time or just passing through, we take care of your insurance needs to make your stay worry-free and safe.
Whether you are looking for an apartment, a house or even a shared accommodation, whether you own a car or not, it is crucial to be properly insured.
The Luxembourg insurance system offers extensive coverage in several areas. For newcomers, certain coverages are legally required upon installation here. This is the case in particular for health insurance and long-term care insurance, for which contributions are deducted directly from salary.
In addition to these compulsory insurance covers, it is strongly recommended to take out:
- private-life liability insurance, which covers unintentional damage caused to third parties
- home insurance for your home
- car insurance if you own a vehicle
Baloise is here to guide you in your choice of insurance coverage adapted to your situation.

You must be insured for civil liability, i.e. for any damage caused to others if you drive a car or cycle, or if you own a dog.
If you rent a place to live, the landlord will ask you to take out insurance.
If you buy a home, the bank will also require the property to be insured.
Home insurance is not compulsory, but if you are renting, the landlord may ask you to take out such insurance. If you decide to buy a property, the bank will also ask you to take out an insurance.
In addition, in the event of a claim, a tenant without home insurance must compensate for all the damage to the rented property and the damaged furniture.
If you are an employee, your employer is responsible for making the necessary declarations for obtaining this to the CSS. If you are self-employed, you must make the declarations yourself.
